Tips to Save Energy at Home!

Tips to Save Energy at Home!

If you want to save money on your bills and help the planet, here are some easy tips for you and your family to reduce energy in every room of your home:

Home Heating:

  • Turn down the thermostat: One degree lower could save you up to £128 a year.
  • Use a timer: Set your thermostat to come on only when you need it.
  • Don't heat empty rooms: Reduce or turn off radiators in unused rooms.
  • Keep doors closed: Keep doors between adjoining rooms shut to stop the heat from escaping.
  • Draught proofing: Block gaps where heat can escape and cold air can get in.
  • Bleed your radiators: trapped air can make your radiators less efficient.

Kitchen:

  • Defrost your fridge freezer regularly.
  • Use smaller pans: the smaller the pan, the less heat you'll need.
  • Keep saucepan lids on: this will heat your food faster and use less energy.
  • Fill the dishwasher before each cycle.
  • Only boil the water you need.

Bathroom:

Save water and money on your energy bills:

  • Shower instead of a bath: Swapping just one bath a week with a 4-minute shower will reduce the amount of hot water you use, and you could save up to £20 per year.
  • Switch to an energy-efficient showerhead.
  • Fix drips and leaks as soon as they happen.

Home lighting and electronics:

Keep the lights on for less:

  • Fitting LED bulbs is a great way to reduce energy use at home.
  • Switch off the lights when you leave a room.
  • Check the energy rating when buying new appliances.
  • Check your energy tariff: Reviewing your energy tariff regularly could save you money.
  • Smart meter: With a smart meter, you'll easily be able to track your energy usage and see where you can save to lower your bills and your carbon footprint.
